Description:
The second of three albums to break the mainstream barrier by neo-Celtic songstress Loreena McKennitt, THE MASK AND THE MIRROR is a majestic pilgrimage across the Mediterranean region, following in the converging/diverging footsteps of the region's major religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam. McKennitt's instrumentation is more exotic this time out, incorporating more Middle Eastern, Indian and Gypsy influences with the use of instruments like the ney, dumbek, tamboura, electric sitar and the esraj. Her haunting vocals are still the focal point and are as gorgeous as ever, as she humbly croons lyrics based on the poetic works of St. John on the Cross and Yeats with the emotive manner of a Celtic air. The instrumental piece "Santiago" is worth the price of this disc alone.
